DATABASES and Datasets for Invasive Species

Do you have data, or an information system that you would like highlighted here? Please mention the ISIN when you contact us about it!

On this page you will find links to invasive species data sources including a catalog of Invasive Alien Species Information Systems.

Datasets | Information Systems | Additional resources

Invasive species data is available in many different formats ranging from printed materials to complex databases and electronic information systems. The ISIN funds and coordinates the generation of invasive species data by partnering with government, non-government, non-profit, and private organizations throughout the United States and the world. A basic philosophy of the ISIN is to avoid reinventing data resources without first taking into account existing ones. So the ISIN acts as a facilitator or gateway through which others may learn about and build partnerships with existing invasive species data resources.

Datasets

> Database(s) containing plot data, polygon data, and point data on the occurrence of non-native species can be merged to improve each individual dataset and create a better knowledge base of non-native species. Click here to see an example of data synthesis.

Invasive Alien Species Information Systems Catalog

The ISIN has cataloged over 200 online invasive alien species information systems as part of our collaboration with the Global Invasive Species Information Network (GISIN). The catalog contains information systems with global coverage, and regional (e.g. Asia, Europe) and national (USA, South Africa, Japan) coverage. The entire catalog can be downloaded from the GISIN Web site in Text (148Kb), Microsoft Word Document (1.1Mb) and Hypertext Markup (1.3Mb) formats.

> The NBII Central Southwest/Gulf Coast Information Node (CSWGCIN) is accumulating datasets that catalog or inventory the invasive species of the region. These datasets are available here.

> Galveston Bay Invasive Species Risk Assessment Project - accumulates and assesses existing information on the identity, characteristics, and impacts of exotic species invading ecosystems in the lower Galveston Bay watershed.

> Invasive Species Databases, Proceedings of a Workshop. Excerpt from the Foreword: In 1998, a workshop was convened "...on behalf ot he Departments of the Interior, Agriculture, and Commerce in collaboration with the Charles Valentine Riley Memorial Foundation. On-line demonstrations and expert panels provided an opportunity for professionals in widely diverse fields of science and management to meet for the first time to apply their skills to the problem of invasive species. By exchanging information on how various database systems have been developed in the past, these federal, state, and non-governmental participants agreed on the need for linking and exploring applied uses of databases."
